Three Things Thursday

1. My son failed his eye test at school so we took him to get his eyes checked and found out that he has really bad astigmatism in one eye. Apparently his right eye is doing all of the work so he has to wear glasses full time now. He is not very excited about it and today will be his first day wearing his glasses to school. I hope it goes well. If one person makes fun of him I know that he will refuse to wear his glasses. Kids can be cruel and he has ran into quite a few of them who are not so nice at times.
2. It is officially taper time and I am so nervous about my upcoming race. The ten day forecast will be available tomorrow and I am really concerned about the heat that we have been having here in So Cal. As of now it is looking like the temperatures are rising which may result in adjusting my goals for the race. Bummer! I do not run well in the heat...
3. On Father's Day I will be participating in the commencement ceremony for earning my Master's Degree. I actually finished all of my classes some time ago but since the ceremonies are held once a year, I had to wait all this time. I am not sure why they planned it on Father's Day but I am excited that my Dad will be coming and we will be able to spend the day together after the ceremonies.

    1. Thank You Nancy. He is a very sweet and loveable little thing. He goes to a private Christian school and some of those kids are just not very Christian-like at times.

  2. I hope things went well for your son :)

And I'm doing a cooler weather dance for you for race day. Heat is so hard to manage I've found a good reaction (for me) using salt tabs when it's hot/humid. Not sure if you've tried, but might be worth it (like, try today and make sure your body's ok with it)

Congratulations on your master's program!! For you especially, what a special time (Father's Day) to spend such a great accomplishment w/ him.

    1. I actually bought some salt tablets but never tried them or even opened them because I was afraid they would taste like salt. I am going to try them for my race after this one. Thank you for the advice.

I am so glad to be done with my Master's degree. I swear I will never ever go back to school! I have a love/hate with school just like I do with the marathon.

    1. I hope he survived the day. We will see when he gets home. You need to move back to California...seriously!

  4. Can he wear contacts yet? My daughter had the same issue, but last year (she's 13) we got her contacts and it helped her self esteem so much!

    Good luck on your race!

Congrats again on your degree. When I got mine last year I was like a little kid in a candy store. Missed the ceremony as it was held in Florida, but that diploma is so important to me!

  5. Thank You! I am so glad to finally have that degree in my hands. It was tough working full time and going to school.I think he is too young to wear contacts. I think I will give it a try if he has issues with the glasses.

  6. I hope your son did not get teased...I think he looks great. Love the black frames

Ok for the race I would carry salt tablets. This is not something you really need to try before I think. I would carry some just in case. I use them and it does help.

    1. I think I will try the salt tablets. Hopefully they help me make it to the finish line because I am going to need that extra push!

  7. How old is he? Younger kids tend to be more fascinated by glasses than anything else. Older kids may make snide comments - fifth graders and older can have a lack of empathy, but they can also be very kind when they try. I'm sure it'll be fine.

    1. He is 11 and is in 5th grade. It seemed to go well today so hopefully it will continue. The school year is almost over so hopefully all of the students will get used to seeing him with his glasses so that when he returns next it will not be a surprise.

  9. I think your son looks great in his glasses! You'd think kids would have learned by now that most of us need them for one thing or another....

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the heat doesn't materialize so intensely. I hate running in heat too.

    1. Thank You Christy! His teacher tried on his glasses and told him that she wants to get fake glasses just like his because she likes them so much. That really made him feel good so hopefully this will be a good thing for him.
