Taper Time and A Crazy Goal!

LA Marathon is less than three weeks away and that means that it is taper time! My long runs for the past two weeks have been 22 miles and this last one was pretty good. I ran with a friend from work (and her friend) who are members of the Snail's Pace running club and it was so nice not to have to run 22 miles alone. They are both going for a sub-four marathon and I think they are more than ready to make it happen! I think I am going to seriously consider joining a running club. It was really nice to have the support out on the course and the snacks were the best! I never eat while out on my runs but I did on Saturday and those pretzels tasted sooo good!
We ran out by the beach and the weather was great! I was expecting it to be much warmer but it was really nice. I pushed myself the last couple of miles (8:08 and 7:35) and even after that I could have kept going. I was pretty surprised since that rarely happens. It must have been the snacks!
I am planning to do somewhat of a long run this weekend but will be cutting my mileage way back. I am starting to get some ideas of what my goal for LA Marathon will be. I have a pretty crazy goal in mind but chances are that I am going to move forward with it. I will share it when I am 100% sure that I am ready to take the chance!

Do you eat during your long runs?
If you do, what do you eat? I never do. GU is about all I take during my long runs.

Weekly Update (9/30/13 to 10/06/13) and One Week Until #4!

One more week until Marathon #4 and I have not been feeling so great this week. Perfect! I went to the doctor and found out that my blood pressure is lower than normal which explains why I have been feeling kind of light-headed lately. Hopefully this won't stop me from toeing that Start line in a week but I have to do what is best for me. My doctor has suggested that I do not run the full marathon but I will make that decision next week based on how I feel. Fingers crossed!!!

MondayREST DAY

Tuesday: 6.21 Miles on the treadmill @9:39 pace. I needed a break since I had not been feeling so great.

Wednesday: REST DAY

Thursday REST DAY-Had dinner with my friend and she is doing so much better! I felt so good driving home knowing that she had made some huge progress in the last week!

Friday: 10.52 Miles@9:33 pace. This was my other half's long run so I tagged along and it was a great one. We ran some hills and he was pretty pooped and ended up with sore calves the next day. Sorry Honey but you said you wanted to run some hills!

Saturday: REST DAY

Sunday: 8.30 Miles@8:16 pace. The weather was a perfect 57 degrees and I just ran by feel.

TOTAL MILES:25
I am planning on running two short and easy runs next week and then it is showtime! The weather looks decent and it better stay that way!

Does tapering drive you crazy?
It makes me feel like I am going to lose all of my training but I know it is part of the plan!

Weekly Update (9/23/13 to 9/29/13) and it's That Time Again!

In two weeks I will be running Marathon #4! The doubts are starting to settle in but I keep telling myself that I have no big plans for this race so just RELAX! My legs have been feeling pretty good lately even after my long runs which include lots of miles at Marathon Goal Pace. It is now Taper Time, which means I need to slow things down and start focusing on this marathon.

MondayREST DAY

Tuesday7.52 Miles on the treadmill @7:58 pace. I have really been trying to get a good tempo run in on Tuesdays since it gets me motivated for the rest of the week. It has been helping my confidence level a whole lot!

Wednesday: REST DAY

Thursday 9.34 Miles@10:02 pace. I ran with my other half and this was his long run for the week. We ran hills in the wind with a light drizzle and it was a great run! I am kind of enjoying these mid-distance runs at an easy pace. It feels good to go for an easy paced run every once in a while. Later on in the evening, I also went on a 4 mile walk with my friend just to talk. She is doing much better but still has a long road ahead of her.

Friday: REST DAY

Saturday:  REST DAY-We spent the day at the LA County Fair and we had a great time eating and eating and eating!

Sunday: 18.11 Miles @8:28 pace. This was a tough run for me and I was pretty burned out for the remainder of the day. My son had a tray of goodies waiting for me when I got home. I am not sure what the  "STOP DUI CHECKPOINT" sign is all about but he has been on "sign making" kick lately and is always waiting for me to get back with something interesting. I love to drink chocolate milk after a good run and it tasted especially good after this run! I would love to see it and the Finish Line of some of my races.

Total Miles: 35 Miles

I am thinking about wrapping things up next week with a 10-13 mile long run and then keeping my runs easy until race day. Taper time is the hardest part for me because I feel like I need to be doing more. We will see how it goes!

What is your favorite post run drink?
CHOCOLATE MILK for me!

Marathon Training: Week 11 and It's Race Week!

Week 11 was a super low mileage week where I tried to keep my runs at a decent pace. The temperatures were still in the mid 80's so I am glad that it was an easy week. This week will be even easier with two really short and easy paced runs.

Week 11 consisted of the following:

Run 1: 7 Miles@8:44 on the TM

Run 2: 10 Miles @8:29

Run 3: 5 Miles@8:46

Total Miles: 22

Race week is finally here! For some reason I am more nervous than excited about this race than any other race that I have ever ran. Is it because I haven’t ran a marathon in over a year or simply because it’s a marathon? 26.2 Miles is no joke! I have a love/hate relationship with the marathon but I have to conquer this distance to continue my journey to get to Boston someday.

I have been recapping my training for the past eleven weeks to keep myself accountable and to track my progress.  I ran a total of 323 miles (which includes 9 miles I will run this week) in the past 11 weeks which included two 20 milers and one 22 miler. I opted for a 12-week training period at the last minute to avoid training through the summer for a winter marathon. I am hoping this shorter training cycle does not result in an upsetting race since I normally train for 16 weeks. I never follow any specific training plan since I have problems sticking to them due to my busy schedule. I usually look at a few different plans and create one that works for me.
I felt pretty strong on my long runs but know that I still need lots of work to make them feel much easier. I had a lumbar strain in my lower back which forced me to miss a planned 20 miler in Week 3 but other than that I had no major setbacks. In Week 7, I ran the So. Cal Ragnar Relay so I rested up and kept the miles low since my body is not used to running 3 times in a 24-hour period. I didn't want to risk an injury so I lost some mileage in Week 7 as well but I think I played it safe.

So having said this, it is time for me to trust my training and start preparing myself mentally for this challenge. I haven’t figured out my race strategy quite yet. I tend not do this since it completely throws my race off if I get derailed and can’t meet the goal. The only numbers that are sticking in my head right now are 9:09, which is the average pace needed to run this marathon in under 4 hours (3:59:59)!
