Time sure is flying by this year! I figured it was time to check in with my 2014 goals and see where I stand mid year. This is also a good way to keep myself accountable and push myself a little harder where I am lacking. Here is an update on my goals that I set for 2014.
MY GOALS FOR 2014
1) Run a Boston Qualifying Time of 3:45 or better.
Status: This one hasn't happened yet. I think I might have missed my window of opportunity when I missed my goal race back in May. I still have time but I doubt that the race that I have in September not is the perfect race for it to happen. The weather will be a lot warmer so I don't want to get myself too excited about it.

2) Run 1400 miles in 2014 which is an average of 117 miles/month.
Status: As of the end of June, my total mileage for the year is 661 and I should be at 702. I am coming up a little bit short on this one but I still have time to make it up. I think I can do it if everything continues to go as planned.
3) Run a Half Marathon in 1:45. My PR in the half is 1:46:58 and this year I did not give much focus to the half marathon but mainly used the distance for training runs.
Status: I am so used to using half marathons as part of my marathon training that I don't even know how to push myself in a half marathon. I might have to sign up for a half marathon and actually race it. I think I still have time to sign up for a fall half and see what I am capable of pulling off.
4) Put Speedwork back into my training.
Status:I actually added speedwork back into my training but noticed that I get lots of weird pains in my shins when I do it. I know that I need to do it but all the pains interfere with my other runs for the week so I am not sure how to approach this one. I don't want to risk an injury and end up side lined so I have been putting more focus on my tempo runs versus speedwork.
5) Give trail running a try. I have been wanting to try it for a long time and I think I will go for it in 2014.
Status: This goal is definitely going to happen this year. I might just sign up for an easy trail run and see what happens. I bought some trail running shoes and they are still sitting there waiting for me to put them on and go for a run.

I haven't done a mid year check in, I will have to do that for my next post, if I remember :) Do give trail running a try, I love it, although I have not done a trail race ever, maybe I should put that on my list of goals for next year.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason trail running make me nervous. I think it has something to do with the elevation charts that I see posted for the trail races. I think you should do a trail race too :)
DeleteDefinitely try trail running! It never had much appeal to me and then I had to do it while traveling and I loved it! And I think you can definitely get that half PR!!!!
ReplyDeleteI plan on giving it a try but I think the elevation of some of these races scares me a little bit. I hope to PR the half marathon soon. I would love to run a 1:45!
DeleteI just did a half-year check-in and I've run 493 miles and biked 656. Most of the year I focused on half marathon training (which was fun -- I think you would enjoy scaling down and going for that 1:45! I want to do that too!) Last month the full marathon training ramped up and my miles increased to 128. Only two more months until Santa Rosa and I'm terrified! I'm on track with the training but the full marathon distance is intimidating me (even though (because?) this will be my fourth full).
ReplyDeleteI plan to scale things down towards the end of the year and go for a better time in the half soon. The marathon is a beast and I am terrified every single time too! I hope the weather is good to you in Santa Rosa and you have a great race. In any case, just relax and do the best that you can with the cards you are dealt on race day.
DeleteI've been wanting to give rail running a try too! There just aren't many trails near me so I wouldn't even know where to start. I've got a half in August and I'm really hoping to finally break 1:44 but I have no idea where I stand when it comes to that distance! I ran 13.1 in my own a few weeks ago in 1:49 and I wasn't "racing" so I'm hoping I'll be able to pull it off once I'm in the race atmosphere. Who knows!
ReplyDeleteI think you can do way better than a 1:44. I am thinking 1:39-1:40 for you. Your 10K time was amazing and that is a very good indicator of what you can do in the half. I wish we lived close to each other so we could try the trails out together.

DeleteYou're so close to getting to where you need to be for your yearly mileage goal that I think you'll make that goal. Trail running will be fun as long as you don't run into any bobcats or snakes!
ReplyDeleteMy one and only goal this year is qualify at St George. Otherwise if becomes a 2015 goal to qualify at Houston!
ReplyDeleteAnd speed work messes with my legs sometimes too. I'm only doing it once a week bc the plan calls for it otherwise is probably skip it!
