I'm Losing Body Parts!!

It's always something!  My right shin is super sore and I am starting to panic.  I put some KT Tape on it and I am icing it a few times a day. My hamstring injury was on my left leg and now I have a shin splint on the right one!

It doesn't stop there! My toe nail on my right foot has been super sore and I have been trying to ignore it. Well last night I was kind of looking at it to see if it was going to fall off or what the heck was going on with it and I realized that I had a blister under my nail. Weird, I know. I squeezed my toe and you can just imagine what happened next. After the blister popped, I tried to clean it and off came my toenail. It didn't hurt then but it does now. I have about 2% of my toe nail left.  It is really scary looking so I censored the picture for you! My son says I have a whole in my toe! Sorry if I grossed anyone out but hey it happens!
I was hoping to get a couple of runs in before my half marathon on Sunday but if this shin and toe continue to hurt, I am going to just take it easy so I have a chance of pulling off a somewhat decent run. So my right leg is a mess... I might be hopping on Sunday if I don't figure out how to deal with this right leg/toenail disaster I have on my hands!

Any suggestions on how I can deal with this toe nail fiasco and still be able to run on Sunday without too much pain?
I don't think a band-aid is going to do the trick this time!

  1. Ouch. Hope you are all healed up by the 1/2. Would it not be nice if we could just have one thing happen and then nothing else happen for awhile.:)

    1. I am trying to do everything I can to be able to put my shoes back on! I should have just left it alone but it was already hurting and I knew that something was up! I guess I will survive. I am more concerned about my shin right now. It is was it is :)

  2. awh, I too have had this happen, and soon thankfully a callous will build up and it won't hurt anymore. <>

  4. Ahhhhh NOOO! I had the exact same toe nail fall off after my one and only full marathon. The same thing happened - I had a blister, popped it, and then BAM. Bye bye toe nail. I kind of just left it and it was fine. I actually didn't have any pain at all, but my entire nail came off. I didn't have any pieces left over like you do. I say just take the time off. You've already done all of the important training so just relax and kill it on race day! Your legs will be nice and fresh!

    1. I should have just left it alone but too late!! I'm trying to wear flip flops whenever I can so there's no pressure on it. I think I did my final run today and it's time to take it easy and keyless this toenail and shin pain calm down!! Thanks for the advice.

  5. Ohh ouch!!! I've never had a toenail fall off. That must mean you now can join some uber-elite group of runners though...only the truly hard core lose toenails!! Good luck and I hope it all feels much better!

    1. Thank you for the well wishes! The funny thing that is that I am not hard core by far and cannot seem to keep all ten toenails! I think the only time I had all of my toenails was when I was injured. No pedicures for me!

  7. I don't have any advice, but I can tell you I've been there. What I'm hoping for you is that the pain abates. I think you're already doing all the right things.

    1. The toe is actually feeling better today but the shin is still sore. I am probably going to lay low until Sunday and just do what I can.

I would try to let it "dry" and not cover as much as you can and tape it on race day....so sorry

    1. That's the plan Caroline! I have a pair of flip flops hidden under the desk! The shin is still tender so I hope that with some rest until Sunday that it will subside. Great job on your first HTC relay! I am so proud of you and jealous too that I wasn't there too!

  9. I'd second what Caroline said. As for taping it, try surgical tape -- it's like the sticky part of a bandaid but without the un-sticky pad part, so it's less likely to come off when you're running.
    Good luck in your race!

    1. Thank you for the advise for taping up the toe and the well wishes. It is much better today but I will find out in the morning when the shoe goes back on. I have not worn closed toed shoes for a few days now.
