Shin Pain Where Are You and My Year End Race Wish List

I never thought the day would come where I would be feeling thankful to have ran 8.50 miles in a week but it did. This past week I managed those 8.50 miles with minimal shin pain. Sunday morning was the first day in a few months that I actually stepped out of bed and felt pain free. The pain in my shin was gone but my calves were a little sore! I feel like I can't win but I am hoping that the shin pain stays away and the calf pain subsides with some foam rolling. Was it the change from the Nike's back to the Mizunos or is this shin pain finally going away? I guess I will never know but I do know that I am going to stick with the Mizunos for a while and see what happens. The only thing that I don't like about the Mizunos is that I think I am in between sizes so I can't get the perfect fit. A size 8 seems just a bit small but the 8-1/2 is kind of big.
This week I will continue to keep the mileage low and stay at an pace easy and see if my luck continues. I want to sign up for some races but have been holding off due to the shin issue and the fact that that I have enough DNS's on my record! Registration for the Fontana Days Half Marathon opens today and I really want to register.  The race isn't until June 1, 2013 so I think it is safe to sign up for it plus $40 is a reasonable registration fee for a half marathon. I am used to paying $150 for Disney half marathons which are not cheap! The Fontana Days Half Marathon sells out every year and is pretty close to home so no hotel required. It is an easy PR course since it is downhill and is recognized as the fastest in the world by the USATF.

I also want to sign up for a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day but I am going to hold off until a few days before since this race does not sell out. I want to be able to run at a decent 5K pace and not just for the heck of it. My current 5K goal is sub 23:00 and I am not sure if I am capable of that right now since I have not been running very much at all. I would love to do a Christmas fun run too but I am not sure if I am over committing at this point. I guess I just love running...what can I say?

So are you planning on signing up for any Turkey Trots or Holiday themed races to close out the year?

Do you already have a Race Wish List for 2013?
I do! I want to run so many races that it makes my mind spin! The first half of the year is pretty booked but I would love to add CIM to December, 2013.

  1. Glad your shin is feeling better, hope it stays that way!

I am hoping to do a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving and a Toys for Tots Run in December, oddly I haven't looked to far into 2013 beyond hoping to do 3 half marathons and Hood to Coast again.

    1. I would love to do Hood to Coast too but the competition is tough! I think I have my running schedule booked up until April so now all I need to do is stay injury free so I can actually run the races!

  3. Yay for no shin pain! Hope it stays that way :)

Holiday runs are always fun. I plan on running in a Turkey Trot and Jingle bell run. Probably won't get a PR though because I haven't been running lately.

Ahh the good ole' CIM! I'm would love to run a marathon in my hometown but my schedule won't allow it. One day I will.

  4. I hope your knee pain gets better too! I like to dress up and run the holiday runs for fun. I did a half last year without worrying about time and it was a lot of fun with no pressure. I have been wanting to run CIM for a long time. I can'e believe that you have not ran CIM since it's in your hometown! You have to do it one day!

  6. I probably won't run any races for Thanksgiving...but I'll get up and run a nice easy 4-5 miles that morning and then come home and finish cooking. I like to do that on Thanksgiving. Get up early, put the turkey in the oven, then head out on a nice quiet run by myself. Love it!

    1. That sounds like a good plan. I think I will do the same if the 5K does not work out for me. I usually put my turkey in the oven overnight and let it cook at a really low temperature and it comes out really juicy and delicious!

  7. My fingers are crossed that you have kicked the shin pain for good now.

I'm skipping the Turkey Trot this year, unfortunately. I may watch my husband do it with one or both of our kids, if my long run gets done early enough to do that (our Turkey Trot is always on a Saturday a couple weeks before Thanksgiving). And I do have a race wish list for 2013 but it will depend on how CIM goes!

    1. I am going on day two no shin pain but I have not run very much either so the true test would be a run longer than 6 miles. I always thought that Turkey Trots were always on Thanksgiving weekend. Sometimes it is fun to be on the other side and just be a spectator as long as you are not out due to injury. CIM is just around the corner and I so am excited for you!

  8. So happy things are looking up....
I want to do Fontana again..but I am scared of getting hurt again
    this course is no joke.

I want to do the turkey trot in Claremont...waiting to sign up until last minute we'll see how Big Sur goes first.

2013...Hood to Coast is top priority...I want to go back. Also completing Beach Cities challenge #2 in May.

    1. I would love to experience Hood to Coast too but I know it is very hard to be selected! Did you get injured at Fontana? If you did, I better not sign up. I like the Claremont Turkey Trot but I am waiting until the last minute too.

I am going on day two with no shin pain but my calves have been a little sore. I am just taking it easy for a bit and hope fully I can get back into things soon. Patience...patience....patience!

  9. I feel like Turkey Trots are SOOO big in the US!! I thing there may have been one in my city but I didn't run it. I'd love to continue racing until the end of the year but it gets too darn cold! I'm going to wait until spring and then sign up for some. I want to do some shorter ones, maybe a half (or two) and possibly a FULL!! Bahhh it's been so long since my first one and I'm so scared but I think I'm ready!!

Have a great day and Happy Halloween you little pinata!

    1. You have Canadian Thanksgiving so I guess the Turkey Trots that we have here would not take place in Canada. It is finally starting to cool down here and I am so glad! You could easily do a full you are so darn fit and strong!

  10. Glad your shin is feeling better! I've been working on 2013 but so far all that Allan and I have agreed on is that I'll make a big list of what I'd like to run and we will take it as it comes.

    1. I think your approach is a very smart one! I always try to sign up early and then end up injured and unable to run the races. I have a huge list and have to bring myself back to reality and remove some!
